Tools (MCP)
Model Context Protocol servers can give Builder access to specialized external tools. Add and manage them under Settings → Tools (MCP), then choose Build with MCP for a chat that should use them.
Add a server
- Open Settings and select Tools (MCP).
- Choose an stdio server for a local command or an HTTP server for a remote endpoint.
- Enter the command or URL and add only the environment variables it requires.
- Save the server, enable it, and run tool discovery.
Treat server commands, URLs, and environment values as sensitive configuration. Only add MCP servers you trust and verify what each discovered tool can do.
Consent controls
| Setting | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Ask | Request confirmation before the tool runs. |
| Always | Allow the tool without asking each time. |
| Deny | Prevent Builder from running the tool. |
Prefer Ask until you understand a tool's side effects. Use Always only for a tool and server whose behavior you have reviewed.
Troubleshooting
- Confirm the local command or remote URL works outside Elmony.
- Check required environment variables without pasting their values into chat.
- Run tool discovery again after changing a server.
- Make sure the server and individual tool are enabled and not set to Deny.
